About WattWise

WattWise is a small collection of single-purpose calculators built around one idea: the specific, oddly-worded cost questions people actually type into Google — "how much does my commute cost in gas," "what does it cost to run a space heater all winter" — usually deserve a direct, fast answer, not a 2,000-word article to scroll through first.

Every calculator on this site runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type — distance, wattage, your electricity rate — is sent anywhere or stored; the math happens locally on the page and disappears when you close the tab.

How the numbers are estimated

Each calculator uses a plain, published formula (shown on its own page) rather than a hidden model — gas cost is distance divided by MPG times price per gallon; electricity cost is watts converted to kilowatt-hours times your rate. Default values, like the U.S. average electricity rate, are updated periodically from public sources, but your own utility bill or local gas price will always be more accurate than a national average. Every calculator page notes its assumptions so you know exactly what is and isn't included in the estimate.

Who runs this site

WattWise is an independently run site, not affiliated with any utility company, gas retailer, or hardware manufacturer named on it. It was built by me, Brian — I think there's real value in having a fast, no-nonsense way to figure out what specific, everyday things actually cost to run, instead of guessing or digging through spreadsheets.
